Whats the primary conflict?
In the play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the main conflict is deciding who will inherit Big Daddy's property and trying to figure out why Brick is an alcoholic. Big Daddy plans on giving his estate to his favorite son Brick, but his oldest son Gooper greatly disagrees. Gooper deeply believes that since he is a successful corporate lawyer with a wife and six children that he should receive Big Daddy's estate. Throughout the play Big Daddy prepares Brick to receive his riches although Brick is only interested in drinking alcohol. Big Daddy attempts to convince Brick that he needs to get his life together and start a family on his own, although he kind of has an idea that his son is not interested in having kids with Margaret because he is actually in love with his dead best friend Skipper.Although Brick never openly admits his feelings for Skipper he admits "I'm ashamed, Big Daddy. Thats why I'm a drunk. When I'm drunk, I can stand myself"(99). In say
ing this the audience can safely assume that Brick actually did have feelings for Skipper.
Through constant plans and schemes Gooper and his wife Mae attempt to convince Big Daddy and Big Mama that they should inherit everything, but once they feel that they have finally convinced them Margaret announces that she is pregnant with Brick's child, which is the best news that Big Daddy could ever imagine. Big Mama knows that having a child will put an end to Bricks' drinking and she exclaims "A child will make you pull yourself together and quit this drinking!"(127). Maggie's announcement about her pregnancy ensures that she and Brick will inherit all of Big Daddy's property.
