Thomas Lanier "Tennessee" Williams III lived from March 26, 1911 – February 25, 1983. He grew up in the southern state Mississippi, which is the primary location of most his plays including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.As a child he suffered from rheumatic fever, so he could never fully live up to the expectations that his father had set for him. Although this illness made him very weak he never gave up on his dream of becoming a writer. He started his career as a playwright and poet while he also had a variety of odd jobs. Although he had written several plays and poems prior,it wasn't until 1944 that he received recognition for The Glass Menagerie, which officially established him as a leading American playwright.Among his most famous plays, which have been turned into movies, operas, ballets, and television programs, A Street Named Desire (1947), won him his first Pulitzer Prize and Cat on A Hot Tin Roof won him his second Pulitzer prize in 1955.Like most of his plays, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is inspired by events that occurred in Tennessee William's life and each of them teaches life lessons that he struggled to learn on his own.
